Wilmington MM - June 10, 2017 Inter-generational Event at Newlin Gristmill
Invitation to all members and attenders of Concord Quarterly Meeting to join the members of Wilmington MM at an inter-generational event to be held on June 10 at Newlin Gristmill to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the building of Wilmington's meetinghouse. Registration by May 28 is required to participate in the hands-on activities and tour of the grist mill.
June 10th Event at Newlin Grist Mill
On June 10th Wilmington Friends Meeting invites Concord Quarter Meetings to join us in a daylong intergenerational event at Newlin Grist Mill where we can learn about some of the building trades used to construct our 200 year old Meeting House and tour Newlin’s grist mill, as well have a picnic, play games, and explore Newlin’s many trails.
Newlin Grist Mill’s South Picnic Area (entrance located off Cheyney Road) will be our “home base” for the day and this is where you can park. From here it is a short walk to the mill, where hands-on activities and grist mill tours will be held.
The South Picnic Area has a large ball field in one section, a pavilion with picnic tables in another, and a small field adjacent to the picnic area where we’ll have children’s games such as blob tag, wheelbarrow and three-legged races. Feel free to bring balls, bats, gloves, additional outdoor games, bubble-making items, picnic blankets, and portable chairs. Attendees need to bring their own lunches and beverages, with some to share with others if you are so moved. If anyone wants to bring musical instruments they would be welcome, though there won’t be any amplification system available.
Complete the registration form below and return it to the Meeting as soon as possible, but no later than May 28th, to reserve a slot for the hands-on activities and tour of the grist mill. You can also register the day of the event if there are open slots available but note that there are limited numbers of slots for each activity.
A $15/person fee will entitle you to participate in the hands-on activities and the mill tour.
There is no cost to picnic with us, to walk the grounds, or to watch blacksmithing demonstrations, which will be on-going from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Some of the trails on the Newlin Grist Mill property run along streams, and there is a pond on the property, so children will need adult supervision.
Pond fishing (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
Newlin has a pond stocked with trout. If anyone wants to fish they must register at the front desk before beginning to fish, and registration for pond fishing ends at 3:30 p.m. Please note that those signing up at 3:30 will only have half an hour to fish, so it’s recommended that you come early to get in enough time to catch something! You must keep what you catch or you can donate it to the Tri-County Bird Rescue.
Cost: $5.00 per person and $4.00 per fish caught. Bait is available for $1.00/slice.

Brickmaking (great, messy fun appropriate for all ages)
Participants will make a commemorative brick to keep; bricks will need to be dried and will be available to pickup at the Meeting House later in the summer. The process can be messy - stomping in clay pits, kneading the clay, and pushing it into a form. Wear easy-to-clean clothes! Space is limited to 12 people at each session.

Sand casting (recommended for ages 5 and up, but younger children may be interested)
Participants will make a sprocket gear by pounding fine sand into a form and creating a mold by pushing a wooden sprocket pattern into it. Newlin staff will then pour melted pewter in the mold but participants won’t get near the pewter till it cools! Due to the cost of materials an additional fee of $10 will be charged if you want to take home the gear you make. Payment can be made to Newlin Grist Mill by cash, check, or credit cards.
Space is limited to 20 people at each session.
